Abstract

Top 10 Fish for Beginners

Here are some of the best fish for hobbyists just starting out, in no particular order:

• Honey gourami (Colisa chuna): easy to take care of, stay small (1.5inches max), absolutely stunning.

• Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya): very hardy; peaceful - even for a barb; males in color are incredible.

• Balloon Belly Molly (aquacultured sport of Poecilia sphenops): very popular; come in all colors; hardy; livebearers.

• Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher): best fish to have spawn for you - one day a pair will control half of the tank and parade babies around within a week.

• Aeneus Cory (Corydoras aeneus): best scavenger for a tank, although any cory cat will do; hardy; inexpensive.

• Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus): nice small (1.5inch) fish; easy to keep; likes some plants to swim in and around.

• Zebra danio (Danio rerio): old standard, but for many good reasons - beautiful, hardy; peaceful.

• Clown pleco (Peckoltia vitattus): excellent algae eater; remains small (3-4 inches); doesn’t bother plants.

• Farlowella (various species of Farlowella genus); another great algae eater; interesting looking; won’t eat plants.

• Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare): come in many varieties; best kept in schools of five or more; get large, so be careful what you put them with.

Helpful Hint - almost any fish looks better on dark gravel - brown and even black. Lighter colored gravel makes fish look washed out.
