Care for the Cockatoo Waspfish

Have you ever looked at an angler, lion fish, or toadfish and thought how neat it would be to have in your tank but it will eat all of your fish because they get so big? Well, here is a good option. The Cockatoo Wasp fish can be a personable and flamboyant addition to your aquarium.

The little wasp fish hails from the northwest Pacific ocean. They reach a maximum size on average of 6 inches long. They will not eat corals so they are a coral safe fish, however they do enjoy eating shrimp, smaller crustaceans and smaller fish. Keep them with fish larger then they are. Standard salinity in the aquarium of 1.020-1.024 specific gravity is healthy. They can be reclusive ambush predators, but they can also be rather personable fish. They will begin to recognize the aquarist as  the source of food and begin "begging" for food. If you have a more reclusive fish then it would be a good idea to get some feeding tongs and try to spot feed. Krill, and squid usually work well. If the fish refuses food you can try live ghost shrimp or live feeder fish to get the fish eating. Once that happens it is better to transition back to frozen food, as there is less waste, better nutrition, and cheaper. The wasp fish is a species of scorpion fish. They have venomous spines on the body used solely for defense. If you get envenomated you should seek medical attention immediately. The wasp fish uses his/her venomous spines as defense only. This is very rare for any aquarist if she/he is paying attention when working in the tank.
