Title Dwarf Emerald Rasbora (Celestichthys erythromicron)

Sara Waller

Last Updated

a brief description of the dwarf emerald rasbora.

The dwarf emerald rasbora is a small fish native to the isolated mountain lake of Inlé and surrounding watershed in Shan state, eastern Myanmar, and also occurs close to Loi Kaw township in neighboring Kayah state to the south.  The dwarf emerald rasbora grows to an adult size of .79 inches long.  Adult males are are more colorful than females, with well-defined, iridescent blue vertical bars on the sides and red coloration in the fins.  Females are noticeably rounder bodied and often slightly larger than males.

The dwarf emerald rasbora should be maintained in an aquarium of 15 gallons or larger.  It thrives in densely planted aquarium with gentle water flow, floating plants, and leaf litter (CS706).  A soft, sandy substrate (CS6631) and driftwood pieces will round out the aquarium nicely.  Be sure to have plenty of broken lines of sight, as males can sometimes be quite combative with each other.

The dwarf emerald rasbora prefers a temperature of 68°F to 76°F, a pH of 7.0 to 8.0, and a hardness of 12 to 20°H.  These fish do not fare well in acidic water.

The dwarf emerald rasbora is typically a very peaceful and timid fish and suitable for a small community aquarium.  It will fare especially well in a heavily planted aquarium.  Good tank mates include dwarf shrimp, and other small fish such as pygmy cories, otocinclus, and ember and other small rasbora and tetra species.  They should not be kept with celestial pearl danios, as the two species may hybridize.

Dwarf emerald rasboras are micro predators and should be fed small meaty foods including live black worms, frozen cyclops (SF1001), frozen baby brine shrimp (SF1003), high quality flakes (AL165), and freeze dried CALA-fin (AL1802).  For maximum color, growth, and health these fish will look their best when given probiotics (AL169) in addition to a balanced diet.
